Unique Wedding Rings and Bands

The custom of wedding rings dates back to Roman antiquity and is now a part of many cultures and traditions. Worn on either the left or right "ring" finger, the metal band symbolizes the commitment and fidelity to one's spouse. When it comes to picking a wedding ring, it's crucial to discuss the matter with your partner as the symbolism and meaning of a wedding ring or the importance of one might be very different for each of you.

Something you might want to keep in mind is that the modern "guidelines" for what constitutes an appropriate wedding ring and how much it costs is really a marketing campaign driven by the ring and diamond industry. It's more important that the ring or rings selected are meaningful and appropriate to you and your partner.  Some people have an aversion to wearing rings in general, or occasionally people do some sort of job or do work where wearing a ring isn't a good idea.  It is a good idea to talk about these sorts of special situations before doing any ring shopping. 

Style - This is one of the broadest choices when it comes to a picking a wedding ring. Vintage or modern? Do you and your partner want to have rings that are matching? Does either or both families have a history of passing down wedding rings?

Metal - It used to be that yellow gold was the standard for wedding bands, but that's really changed in contemporary styling. Platinum, titanium, iron and steel have all been used to create striking modern wedding rings. And a Japanese form of metalwork, called "mokume gane" is a blend of metals that forms a pattern not unlike wood grain or marbling.

Set with stones or not? - This is a style for wedding rings that comes and goes regularly, and is often influenced by the budget available to the couple. Some people feel wedding rings should be set with stones, and some prefer a more plain band.

Engagement ring - Some people choose to have an engagement ring. This ring is often given at the time that a marriage proposal is made and is a sign of intent to marry. For some this is a very important signifier and for others it's just an excessive expense. It's important that you have some idea of how your partner feels about an engagement ring before you give one.

Wedding band -This is the actual ring exchanged as part of the wedding ceremony.  As this is most often worn daily for the rest of the relationship, many people opt for a rather simple band that is comfortable and won't be damaged by day-to-day activities.  Others prefer this to have a stone setting which adds to the importance of the ring. 

Eternity ring - This is a more recent development in wedding rings, and is most often exchanged by a married couple who is renewing their vows or celebrating a significant anniversary.  At this point in the relationship, the ring signifies a re-dedication to the relationship or honors a long-time commitment.
