PETA's Anti-Fur Campaign

As an extension of their "Naked" campaign against the use and wearing of fur, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) created their "Ink, Not Mink" campaign. Part of the larger "Fur is Dead" campaign, this series of images and advertisements features tattooed celebrities posing in their skin art to promote anti-fur awareness. The spokesmodels have come from the world of sports, movies, television, rock music and even the tattoo community itself. So far, over a dozen different celebs have stepped up to show their tattoos and their support of this cause.

Why "Ink, Not Mink?"

Fur in the fashion industry is very controversial. Fur farming is one of the worst fates that can befall an animal. As an industry it didn't develop until the late 1800s when fashion demands put market desires ahead of huntable supplies. The majority of the world's fur farms are located in Northern Europe, with about 10% located in the United States.

In pursuit of the perfect pelt, animals are bred and raised just to be killed for their skins. They are kept in crowded, minimally-sized cages or pens and then killed as soon as they develop the desired quality of coat. Anywhere from 10%-25% of the animals die from poor conditions or disease before they can be "harvested."

The most farmed animal is mink, followed by chinchillas and foxes. Animals are killed via just about any means possible with electrocution and drowning being frequently used options as the furs are not damaged using those methods. Sadly a significant percentage of animals survive the euthasia and are then skinned while still alive.

I have to commend you for making a PETA-related hub. I used to be a member of PETA and just mentioning so was anxiety inducing. Back on the (dietary) vegan wagon, I'm glad to see that both vegans and omnis alike seem less aggressive (or maybe we have all just matured over time). I do love this series by PETA and am glad to see it. Plus, I love me some ink. ;)

I love the fact that people are also supporting no fur...but..it doesn't hide the fact that PETA = death to pets. :( They can push their agenda but those animals killed in the van and thrown in the dumpster doesnt go away

An excellent editorial and I hope one day fur will only be worn by beautiful animals who were born in these gorgeous fur coats.

we all have a right to look how we want to look, even animals. so if you want to look cool "think ink, not mink" its the only way to go - may you all walk in peace with your god.

I am glad that people are taking notice of the fur trade still. Celebrities such as Beyonce should be ashamed of this vile trade that still continues. In the UK the mink were kept in farms for the fur trade and have now been released into the wild where they decimate the local wildlife that have not known such a ferocious predator. Indeed the only real predator of the Mink in the UK is the brown rat. In the past when fur or pelts were used it because there was nothing else available and the whole animal was used in some way. This modern belief that humans look good in furs is just barbaric and stupid. Give me cotton any day.

Great Hub and a great message.
